چکیده

In principle, to nd the optimal code one needs to optimize the tness functionH with respect to all its 2 m s degrees of freedom, the m s entries of the encoder e i and the m s entries of the decoder dj!, taking into account the m conservation relations for the encoder P i e i = 1 and the s conservation relations for the decoder P ! dj! = 1. However, although the degrees of freedom of the encoder and the decoder are independent, most encoder-decoder combinations would yield high distortion and therefore an improbable code. Instead, it proves convenient to sum only over the most probable codes by considering for each encoder e i only the most probable decoder dj! (This is somewhat similar to a saddle-point approximation). An optimal decoder must take into account the knowledge about the encoder, that is if the encoder e i tends to encode the meaning ! as the symbol j then it is likely that the decoder dj! will interpret j as !. The mathematical manifestation of this intuitive observation is through the Bayes theorem, P (j ! !) = P (j)P (jj!) = P (!)P (jj!) = P (! ! j). For the present channel, Bayes theorem can be expressed as

A rate-distortion scenario for the emergence and evolution of noisy molecular codes

We discuss, in terms of rate-distortion theory, the fitness of molecular codes as the problem of designing an optimal information channel. The fitness is governed by an interplay between the cost and quality of the channel, which induces smoothness in the code. By incorporating this code fitness into population dynamics models, we suggest that the emergence and evolution of molecular codes may ...

Detection of a new canine parvovirus mutant in Iran

BACKGROUND: Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is one of the major causes of fatal gastroenteritis in young dogs. After emergence of CPV-2, two new variants were reported and named CPV-2a and CPV-2b. In 2001 the newest variant was reported and named CPV-2c. The difference between CPV strains is related to amino acid changes in viral capsid protein (VP2). OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was geneti...

A model for the emergence of the genetic code as a transition in a noisy information channel

The genetic code maps the 64 nucleotide triplets (codons) to 20 amino acids. Some argue that the specific form of the code with its 20 amino acids might be a 'frozen accident' because of the overwhelming effects of any further change. Others see it as a consequence of primordial biochemical pathways and their evolution. Here we examine a scenario in which evolution drives the emergence of a gen...
